As a parent to 2 girls and the founder of a parenting platform I often get asked this question.

When should I give my child a phone?

The right age for a child to get a phone varies depending on a variety of factors, including the child’s maturity level, the family’s needs and values, and the specific reasons for getting the phone.

Some parents believe that children should not have a phone until they are teenagers, around 13 or 14 years old. They argue that younger children may not be mature enough to handle the responsibility of a phone and may be more vulnerable to the risks associated with phone use, such as cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.

Other parents believe that it is appropriate for children to have a phone earlier, such as around the age of 10 or 11 years. For them it is more of a way of staying in touch with parents and for safety reasons, such as being able to call for help in an emergency.

Ultimately, the decision of when to give your child a phone should be based on your family’s unique circumstances and values. It may be helpful to have a conversation with your child about the responsibility that comes with having a phone, and to set clear guidelines and expectations for its use.
