Things To Do With Your Kids In Semmozhi Poonga

As a child, the Woodlands Drive-In Restaurant in Cathedral Road was a favourite hangout on Sunday evenings for a fun, family meal. I remember the place, that served great dosas, surrounded by lush greenery and if we were lucky, we could even spot some rabbits hopping around. A decade ago, the famous restaurant got entangled in a legal battle and the place was shut down. I did miss the dosas, but the city was lucky enough to get the nod to set up it’s first ever Botanical Garden in the same vantage location!

Chennai’s first Botanical Garden, set up in 2010, is situated right in the middle of the Cathedral Road-Mount Road junction and the inside view hardly gives you a reality check of the busy, buzzing roads! One of the well-maintained horticultural parks that houses more than 500 species of plants, the Semmozhi Poonga is a favourite hangout for families and children.

There’s the golden garden, water and rock garden, butterfly garden, sunken garden, fern garden and lots more inside for enthusiastic botanists! The little pond, the beautiful arch at the entrance and the dancing lights are the other highlights you absolutely shouldn’t miss! 

What’s special for kids:

• There’s greenery everywhere you turn around at this place and the kids will sure love it! They have an exclusive play area, with slides, swings, scaffolding, sandpit and lots more.
• And for the older ones who just love to race with one another, there is vast open green space with just no restrictions!
• Just a heads up- the place can get a li’l crowded on weekends, so if you want to explore some silence with the kids, e suggest you head there on the weekdays. 
• If you are complaining of how the city life has very little scope clean, green air and the kids hardly get an open space to play around- the Semmozhi Poonga give us one thing less to complain about! Head there with the kids, today!
• Clean, green and very well maintained, this place is going to top the list of things to do with kids in Chennai for a long time!
