When we say young entrepreneur we form an image in our head of a 25-30-year-old with a good head on their shoulder, definitely not a teenager in school doing homework alongside their 6-figure business. But that’s exactly what a 13-year-old entrepreneur, Anoushka Poddar is doing, and doing it brilliantly.

This is episode 7/15 of the campaign by Kidsstoppress and Instagram celebrating kids who are lifelong learners and will continue to dream and make them come true. As part of this campaign we sat down with Anoushka and here’s what we learned about her.

What inspired her?

A student at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, Anoushka says she has always dreamed to make it big in business. Inspired by real powerhouses like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, Anoushka always wanted to create a business that would impact the lives of people.

Her idea for the business came from that very desire to impact others. As a teen herself she knew exactly the problems teens face, especially when it comes to personal care.

“I knew teens and young adults face issues like acne, eczema, and breakouts, and needed the right nourishment for different hair and skin types. Last year, during summer, I started facing skin allergy problems while using my mum’s ‘really famous’ brands.”

After doing a lot of research and talking to her friends, she realised that she wasn’t the only one facing these problems. She also found out that while there are many brands for adults and children, there are very few mainstream personal care products in India for teens.

And that’s how the idea came along. Snazz, a teenager-focused personal care product line.

What is Snazz?
Snazz is tailored to the skin and hair needs of teenagers and tweens, and it treats common
issues such as acne and hair outbreaks.

Anoushka claims it has the proper level of nourishment, distinctive smells, environmentally sustainable packaging, and eye-catching themes.

“We aim to help perplexed teens finally find their personal care solution.”

After conceptualizing the idea and coming up with the business plan Anushka’s father, Abhishek Poddar came up with the initial investment.

Being a 13 year old entrepreneur isn’t easy.
Anoushka says gaining people’s trust and time was the hardest challenge of all.

“While coming up with the formulation of Snazz, multiple manufacturers and packagers were uncertain about the strength of a small-scale brand, especially one being ‘conceptualised’ by a teen, and kept refusing to help or connect themselves with Snazz.”

After hours of persuasion and support from her parents, she was finally able to get a team on board with the idea and launch the product.

Anoushka created Snazz in collaboration with a Mumbai-based manufacturer, who advised her on the best product formulations. The manufacturing plant is in Dhule, Maharashtra. The first products from the brand are “Apple Addiction” shampoos and “Argon Amber” conditioners.

How is Snazz making a difference?
They are tailored to the target market’s skin types and contain natural nutrients and nourishments. The brand adheres to PETA guidelines and Sustainable Development Goals, and it contains no toxic ingredients such as sulphates, phthalates, parabens, or phosphates.

Snazz, which costs Rs 600 a bottle (250ml), is aimed at urban luxury clientele looking for suitable personal care goods. Snazz, according to Anoushka, made Rs 1.2 lakh in sales within a month of its inception.

It’s hard to imagine but she did all of this while managing school routines and her extracurricular activities.

What’s next for Anoushka?
Going forward, she wants to scale up production, professionalise sales and marketing, and hire up to two full-time employees. Anoushka’s three-year vision is to make Snazz a recognised teen brand “with happy customers and new product lines available all over India”.
