This Bengaluru Startup’s Ultrasound Baby Monitor Should Be On Your Must Have List

RIoT Solutions, a Bengaluru-based startup has invented Raybaby monitor- the world’s first non-contact respiration and sleep tracker for babies. Like any high-end monitor, the Raybaby monitor’s camera detects the baby’s movements and transmits what’s going on to an app on the parent’s phone. Also if you are away, using mobile data- don’t worry- the app doesn’t stream live video of your baby continuously, but alerts you at the slightest movement of your kid- from the first smile to the first time he/she tries to stand up! Apart from the biggest advantage- of non-physical contact with the babies, Raybaby monitors also score in the fact that the size of the gadget is small enough to fit inside the palm of your hand.

Medical science has it all to monitor the baby when in the womb and I still remember the first time I saw my little one on the screen. However, after my son was born, like most other first-time mothers I dreaded leaving him alone in the room, kept checking if he was breathing right and did all sorts of crazy things to ensure he was fine. My husband suggested we get a baby monitor so that I am assured he is fine, but I wanted to know a lot more than just to check if my baby was safe and sleeping.

And my wish came true very recently! Bengaluru’s young techies Aardra Kannan Ambili, Ranjana Nair, and Sanchi Poovaya, have invented a baby monitor called Raybaby, a device that no new mommy would think twice to have. The idea dawned when they visited a friend who had a baby, years ago. The baby was a preemie and constantly had to wear a chest band or the parents had to put their hands on the baby’s chest to check if she was breathing properly. This was when the concept behind Raybaby was born.

How is it different from the ones available already?

Like any high-end monitor, the Raybaby monitor’s camera detects the baby’s movements and transmits what’s going on to an app on the parent’s phone. But what about the other vital parameters?

Raybaby treads the middle path and does it in perfection. It captures both the movements of a child, as well as essential parameters such as respiration rate, sleep states, etc without physical contact with the child! Yes- in essence- no more skin contact, uncomfortable wristbands or on-the-chest monitors that make the whole area around the kid look entangled in wires and gadgets.

The slightest noise or movement from the baby is detected- and you will know if it’s something to do with the baby’s breathing or just some happy kicking time by the little one!

How is this done?

Raybaby, as we said employs a camera to relay live movements on your phone. But what makes it stand out is the use of ultrasound technology-ultra wideband (UVB) radar- that is used to monitor the movements of babies in the womb. It also uses radio waves that have the same emission as that of a digital alarm or a radio, to detect even the tiniest movement of the baby.

The app on your phone will feed you with useful statistics on our child’s live respiratory rate, in addition to sleep stats. Weekly graphs, and reports are a part of the app’s useful features. Also if you are away, using mobile data- don’t worry- the app doesn’t stream live video of your baby continuously, but alerts you at the slightest movement of your kid- from the first smile to the first time he/she tries to stand up!

How is it useful?

  • Firstly, if you are have a preemie at home, then this device is sure to help you stay in peace about the little one’s breathing pattern, which is crucial.
  • Also, if your baby is ill, then observing the vitals is definitely the first thing any hospital would do because respiration rate is one of the four most important vitals that get tracked in an ICU facility.
  • The testing part of this baby monitor has given conclusive and satisfying results and Johnson & Johnson Innovations-one of Ray’s investors have also conducted some live sleep-study trials with this monitor.
  • Apart from the biggest advantage- of non-physical contact with the babies, Raybaby monitors also score in the fact that the size of the gadget is small enough to fit inside the palm of your hand.

However, you must be aware that Raybaby only gives you feedback about the baby’s breathing and sleeping habits. If you notice any change in the regular pattern-make sure you consult a doctor immediately.

Price

Raybaby is priced at Rs 17,000 and is available on Kickstarter.com
