This Dad Lists All The Reasons Why India Fails To Recognise Its Female Athletes

Earlier this week I met an upcoming sports brands and realised that some of India’s most successful female athletes of recent times are working with them. In fact, they’re the biggest stars on the roster. For once, the women outshine the men in terms of sports branding. A leading global brand did ‘honour’ Indian athletes but to be fair, there hasn’t been much follow through that one has heard.

So, as a father, I must ask, why must we under-index the sporting achievements of our women and rah-rah their feats in fields of glamour. I will say that there is a lot of talk about women in Indian sport but it comes from quarters of Bollywood rather than the boxing mat. One could argue that it’s all good as long as there’s a spotlight on women in sport. Yet, it bears asking why Koneru Humpy doesn’t get the same respect as Vishwanathan Anand. Why everyone knows the name Virat Kohli but when you try to compare Sachin Tendulkar to Mithali Raj, you get called a fool.
