The holiday season is here and an old argument has reared its ugly head in my household. It may sound silly, but it is pretty huge in my house! Let me start at the beginning.

I don’t know if it happens in your home too, but marriage takes on a whole new meaning once you have kids. A couple’s life begins to revolve around their kids. You wake up talking about your children, you go to sleep talking about your children, all your fights are suddenly about your kids and you even end up bonding over your kids! Once you become parents, you suddenly realise we all have different views on parenting and especially different points of view when one of you is the doer of most chores.

It all started on day one of Diwali holidays when the kids woke up like they usually do at 6.30 in the morning. They were in full holiday mode and decided to laze around in their pajamas till noon. They didn’t want to do anything specific. Lazing around leads to huge appetites and they ended up eating five meals in five hours! To top it all the house looked bore the brunt of their ennui and looked completely out of order.

Now I was fine with this, but when this same act repeated itself on Day 2, the husband freaked out! He went on a rant about the complete lack of discipline in the house! Defending my kids I justified it saying they were on a holiday.

Now how come when we are on a holiday it is alright if we completely give up routine? How come it is absolutely normal for us to laze around in our pajamas when we want the kids to take a shower at the crack of dawn? Holidays are about letting go off routine and enjoying the day just the way you want.

So this holiday season, let your kids breathe a little. Let go off routine and rules. It is fairly simple the way I look at it.

  • As far as they are in bed at a reasonable hour and have their meals on time, there is nothing to worry about.  Holidays are about doing what you want to do and letting go off strict daily rules.
  • Pick your battles:  Figure out what is important to you and keep a few rules. Let them decide what they want to do during the rest of the day.
  • Be a kid with your kids and you will realise the true joy of being on holiday.
  • Try and not try to win every argument, because that will just blossom into a fight and nothing ruins a holiday faster than a fight. Don’t fight because you want things done.

Think about it, don’t we wonder why our kids love their grandparents so much and always want to be at their house? The answer is simple – they simply let them be! They don’t bind them in routine and kids have complete freedom to do what they please. That’s exactly what my ideal holiday would look like.
