Long ago, before my lovely little daughter was born, I had come across a mom’s blog, who had created fun stories through pictures of her newborn baby, in his sleep. I was fascinated by the idea and I decided that very moment that it would be the first project with my child and years later, my muse arrived!

Photography Project:

It’s a simple photography project. The idea was to create fun moments with my baby. Some stories that go beyond the regular smiles and crawls and the little fingers and toes. I wanted to create moments that bring a smile to anyone who witnesses the picture. With lots of planning and some research, I started taking these shots and began posting them on Instagram last month. I was encouraged by the response I received that inspired me to carry on.

Here’s why this is special:

Well, IMHO, there are 2 reasons –

  1. True Photography – Remember the days of 32 photos in one Kodak roll? Remember how we rarely had a chance to click more than one photo at a place? And remember, how much thought went into finding just the right frame, for that one click? That was my starting point. I don’t click many pictures of my child. And I rarely (read – almost never) shoot her on my mobile. (Don’t get me wrong! I am not against mobile photography, but I am against ‘mindless’ photography.) I shoot her with my Canon and go through the process of photo transfer, selection, editing and then sharing with the world. Trust me, one real good photograph has the capacity to hold anyone’s attention much longer than twenty random clicks!
  2. A Sense of achievement – With this beautiful feeling of bringing a life into this world, mothers often experience some frustrations due to the sudden isolation from adults, office, work, colleagues, sanity in general. Again, don’t get me wrong, All mothers, of course, love their children… but some amount of real-world time is a must. A sentiment, many moms reading would relate to. One of the reasons I chose to do this project was to keep my sanity in place and know that beyond the diaper changes and feeds, I’ve created something unique today.

What’s our schedule like?

So, me and Miss P, we begin our day with a morning massage and bath and then she falls asleep (deep sleep) – that’s when I begin the shoot – usually between 11 am to 1 pm. (Sometimes, she wakes up and I get playful shots too, whatever suits the photograph!).

Location: A square mattress right next to a window (my natural light source).

Props: Anything from her toys to clothes to fruits. And some wooden letters I had purchased on Amazon.in, to caption the pictures.

I’m glad to share my experience, and as I get a chance to write about this, here’s a free advice from me to every mother – Find one project to hone when mothering a child. It could be baking, cooking, writing, reading, sewing, knitting, singing, dancing or photography. It’s for having your own moment with the child and quality time for your ‘self’.

Presenting some of my shots, and the count is on…
