When we think education is the single most important change to drive economic growth we hear stories that completely highlight the fact that this very necessity, that will change the future of many, is being taken frivolously.

This government school in Punjab’s Bhalaipur Village in Kapurthala has been running for the past six-seven years with less than two students. Villagers prefer to send their children to study in private school despite the high fees.

Current state of school:

  • At present, the school has just 2 people- a student, and a teacher with a monthly spend of Rs 50,000.
  • The funds are used for mid-day meals, salary of a teacher, and workers
  • The school is not even able to enroll minimum number of students required to run the school.
  • Kamlajit Singh, the only teacher, has been encouraging the parents to send their children with appeals to the village Panchayat.
  •  This year in March, these students were promoted and as of now the school has just one student.
  • According to government rules, there is a provision of transferring the student and the teacher to another school in the vicinity.

Similarly, a case in Tamil Nadu, where Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Primary School located in Thulasingapuram had a school functioning with just two students and a teacher who had only just passed his 12th grade.

The school lost a lot of its students after the Chennai floods and now has not more than 2 students. They now study among broken liquor bottles and thorny buses.
