Top 10 Skills Your Child Will Need In 2020

According to the Future Of Jobs Report by World Economic Forum, the top 3 essential skills children need to possess, that will actually define the job front are- Complex problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity. This earlier report from World Economic Forum described the probable nature of jobs in the year 2030 and what skills would be needed for each of these top 6 jobs. When my little girl was barely a year and a half, I saw her play with a hand towel. For one minute she was using it as a costume for her little dolls, The other minute she laid it out on the floor and got her underwater animal toys to swim in them. And a while later- I saw her fold into a tiny square and serve it as a homemade sandwich for the tea party for her dolls!

There is no end to a child’s creativity, right? And as they grow older, we only hope that with education, it only gets better and they work on that creative spark they are born with. Sadly, as they grow older and when the current education system steps in, creativity and their problem-solving skills take a back seat and children end up doing things that are mundane or boing over and over again.

The Torrance Test of Creative Thinking tells exactly how one’s creative ability diminishes over time, sadly. For instance, your little toddler can come up with endless ways of using a paper clip. It is said that 98% of children in kindergarten are “creative geniuses” and this ability is reduced as they go through the formal schooling system and by the time they turn 25- it is sad that only 3% remain creative geniuses. Are we raising them right?!

The report states how the top 10 skills kids should possess has changed from 2015 to 2020 and how quality control and coordination have given way to emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility. The rise of creativity in the ranking is also testimony to the nature of jobs our children will have to face in the future. Here’s a look at the skills list released.

As parents, if we need to look at these skills chart more seriously, we will have to realise that independent play and other day-to-day routines can help inculcate these top 3 skills in our children- only if we pause and pay attention to what our kids do and how they do it differently. From setting up a LEGO tower to building a paper boat- every kid displays exceptional creativity, and we as parents, need to tune it in the right way. Getting the curve right in C while practising the alphabet may not be that important in the long run, after all!
