We spoke to Twinkle Khanna sometime back and we remember the conversation filled with laughter, thoughts and a lot of wit- in true Twinkle style!
For some one who is an avid book worm that eventually resulted into her becoming one of India’s most successful authors and as someone raising her kids to be book lovers too, we asked Twinkle Khanna what it takes to raise readers and she shared 3 practical tips with us.
3 Tips To Raise Readers
Don’t just preach. Get into action
Children learn more by watching what we do than by listening to us sermonize them all day. Twinkle says pick up a book and set the right example for your kids. The simple “Monkey see monkey do” philosophy that will not only help your kids fall in love with reading but also know that you prioritise this more than television or other screens.
Make reading fun
It can get a little boring at the start and that’s where children need us to help them come back to track. Instead of unidirectional advice asking children to just pick up a book and read, why not make reading times fun? Twinkle suggests using different voices and modulations when reading aloud to children and we totally agree!
Bond with your kids over books
To add to the above point, books are a great way of bonding with your kids. Twinkle shares how she has a competition with her daughter, who’s fiercely competitive like her on how many pages once can finish in a given sitting. Of course kids’ books are a lot easier but that’s the key to help sustain their interest. You could plan a bookathon on a lazy afternoon that helps kids understand what you prirotise more. And this way they develop a habit for life.
