Virtual photoshoots? It seems like an impossible task, but with so much innovation going on to tackle the pandemic, this is also one of them. Photography is a kind of service that is difficult to perform without coming into contact with. Precautions can be taken for sure but if there is a way to do photoshoots virtually, it opens a lot of gates for more projects without any restrictions of location, region or even country.

Virtual photography means the photographer is taking the client’s pictures via a mobile device. The photographer and the client can be anywhere in the world, all they both need is a mobile device, a wifi/internet connection and a laptop.

Tips you need to know in order to have a seamless virtual photoshoot :

Mobile device specifications: Having a smartphone is the bare minimum need since the images are being clicked by the client’s mobile camera, the quality of the camera in the device matters. It is noticed that the iPhone worked better in virtual photoshoots, in comparison to Android. It is important that you share your device details with the photographer prior to the shoot to understand the quality of images in the end.

Internet connection: Having an internet connection via mobile data or wifi is needed but it is important to make sure the speed is good enough. If the speed is not good, there will be a delay between when the photographer clicks the shutter to capture the image and at the client’s end and this lag can change the moment. A lot of shoots are candid and involve babies, kids or a lot of movement, the photographer won’t be able to capture the right image. It is advisable to test the connection before the shoot with your photographer.

Indoor vs Outdoor: Although the shoot can be done either indoor or outdoor, it is preferable that you plan it indoors. The reason is again, one, the internet connectivity might fluctuate a lot outdoors and also indoors, you get nice filtered sunlight.

Natural Light: Ample natural sunlight is crucial for virtual photoshoots as it affects the end quality of images. Check for the sources of natural light in your home, be it a door for balcony, or a wide window, anything can work. It’s best if you make a home tour video and send it to your photographer to check if there is enough light to make the shoot work.

Planning The Right Time Slot: If you are planning to do the shoot with your kids, and want to change outfits, it’s best you plan 2 time slots, in a single day or different days. A lot of movement is needed from your end, as the photographer advises. So it takes your time and energy to make it work. Having the shoot split into 2 slots can make things more manageable for you.

What Kind Of Virtual Shoots Can Be Done?

Any kind, you and your photographer just need to think out of the box to make it work. I have done a variety ranging from birthday cake smash to family to portraits and even maternity shoots. A lot of planning is needed beforehand so it is best if you keep a gap of a week between contacting the photographer and the shoot date.

I hope you have fun planning your shoot and if you need any tips, let us know!
