In a bid to drum up visitors, the Byculla Zoo decided to bring in eight Humboldt Penguins from Seoul in South Korea. Native to countries like Chile and Peru, environmental activists and animal lovers widely criticised the move and #saynotohumboldtsmumbai trended widely across social media. It gathered momentum when one of the penguins even died last October following a mysterious illness.

But authorities stood their ground. And now have something to show off to Mumbai’s public right in time for summer vacation. Earlier this week, the Humboldt Penguin Kaksh was inaugurated by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and his son, Aditya Thackeray and is now being called ‘Mumbai’s pride’! And news reports suggest that the Mumbai zoo has witnessed 32000 visitors in just two days to witness the penguins!

A video of the penguins being introduced to the water has gone viral on social media. Watch it here.

The seven penguins at the zoo currently (after one died last October), have been named Donald, Daisy, Popeye, Olive, Flipper, Bubble and Mr Molt by Madhumita Kale, the veterinarian and caregiver. She said she named Donald and Daisy, Popeye and Olive famous couple names because they seemed to have picked each other as partners. The others? Well, Mr Molt because he seemed to be molting when he arrived, Flipper and Bubble, because they are just cute names!
