This week has been kind. With a mid-week off coming as a blessing in disguise, we had more time to relax, sit back and do things we love together! I sat down with my daughter and her colouring set and we brought some animals to life with this cool app, We also understood why art need not always be perfect and can be messy, thanks to an art therapist. Nothing beats an all snuggled up, cosy Saturday night, right?

I was browsing the list of kid-friendly movies to watch on Netflix when I chanced upon Dhanak. Had heard of the movie when it released — it was released last year, but didn’t get a chance to catch it in the theatres.

The movie, directed by the famous Nagesh Kukunoor, is a simple story about the lovely bonding between a girl (Pari) and her younger brother (Chotu). Set in rural India, in Rajasthan, this movie describes how far one would go, to fulfill a promise. The little brother is blind and his didi has promised him, that he would get his eyesight before he turns 9 (just a couple of months to go). Will she be able to live upto her promise?

Throw in a simple, yet engaging storyline as above, add some doses of Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan references in the movie and some stellar performances by the leads- and you have a winner in Dhanak.

Here’s why you and the kids will love this movie:

  • The kids have their own difficulties but are never shown as dull or weak characters. That’s what I loved most in the movie- no unnecessary melodrama. They have their own share of fun and are a pleasure to witness on screen.
  • Integrating a social message into a movie can make it sound preachy, but Dhanak carefully steers clear of that. We engage ourselves with the little girl and her brother in their journey and can’t wait till the boy gets his eyesight back.
  • The movie teaches your kids one strong message- nothing is impossible. This relatable relationship between the young boy and girl, and how they march ahead to win their dreams is an inspiration for our little ones.

Do the kids get to meet their heroes? Does he get his eyesight back? Watch this award winning movie to find out! Or wait, you can also read the book, to find out what happens to Pari and Chotu! Novelised by Anushka Ravishankar, this book is now on Amazon- Buy it here.
