The month of April is observed as Autism Awareness Month and April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day.
There are reports coming in every day, loaded with statistics and infographics and roughly 1 in every 66 kids in India is affected with autism. The treatment and care for autism has increased over the years, but sadly, the awareness and the support extended to kids and parents is still a long way to go.
How has the outlook towards autism changed over the years? Have we started diagnosing and labelling people with Autism spectrum disorders better after awareness and counselling? Geneticist Wendy Chung gives an interesting outlook to Autism and how its perception has changed over the years, in this TED Talk. For some parents who wonder why their child is autistic or if vaccines cause autism and other related doubts- this TED Talk will prove both helpful and insightful. Stop believing in rumours and make sure the child is diagnosed by a seasoned practitioner before you decide to go ahead with the modes of treatment.
And don’t forget U and I can make a difference in AUTISM.
