What Father’s Day Actually Means To This Dad

You almost take for granted what your parents did for you until…you have to do the same, or are one!

A few years ago, I wrote about how Hallmark Cards or some brilliant marketing agency somewhere in the world had invented a day for everything and everyone…mothers, fathers, friends dogs, pets…grandparents?

It was obvious that I was not a firm believer in these days. Growing up in India in the 80s and 90s in fact, I am not sure many kids or families paid attention to these days (or maybe it was just my family and me). But then, as social media emerged and every aspect of everyone’s lives were paraded out there, for all to see, these ‘days’ seemed to take on more significance and importance.

Suddenly, everyone’s mothers and fathers were ‘the best in the world’, ‘the most loving’, ‘the most caring’.

Either I had missed something or it felt like social media had brought out all the love and care in the world. A mother’s day or father’s day brunch was not that uncommon (restaurants too had to cash in on the hype), neither was a gushy post claiming undying love for one’s parents and the sacrifices they had made for their children.

And I thought to myself – great. I’m left behind. FOMO, as you would call it today! I’m going to have to do it now or else my parents are going to feel bad, as though I don’t love them (thankfully I like to think my parents are more practical…and more importantly spend less time on social media). I always thought that if you cared for your parents, or loved ones, why celebrate them only on a single day? Why not show them your love, affection and how much you care for them every day? Are they less important or less loved on those other 364 days?

You can sense that I am generally not a big fan of these ‘days’ and the show that has been built around it.

However, it sort of changes…over time…when…you become a parent. You almost take for granted what your parents did for you until…you have to do the same, or are one!
