While doctors have not yet pressed the panic button, we are sure mommies out there are freaking out and taking every possible measure to safeguard their little ones from this dreaded virus. With both young and old being affected by this easily transmitted disease, here are some quick facts you should arm yourself with as a parent to safeguard your children and family.

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu (swine influenza) is a disease of pigs. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by one of many Influenza A viruses.  The current outbreak of swine flu that has infected humans is of the H1N1 type – this type is not as dangerous as some others.

Symptoms of Swine Flu

  • High Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Some children also show severe signs like discolouration of the skin, fits, and difficulty in breathing.

How does a human catch it?

  • From contact with infected pigs
  • From contact with infected humans

In cases when humans have infected other humans close contact was necessary with the infected person, and they nearly always occurred in closed groups of people.
