During the hot summer season, loss of appetite is very common, and the phenomenon affects both adults and children alike. Make mealtimes enjoyable and not just about eating, sit down and chat about other things of their interest. Try to appeal to their minds as much as their taste buds; you may draw a smiley face with peanut butter on top of their dish. Some fun-shaped tableware also may help even the pickiest eaters.

But What If It Doesn’t Work?

As a parent, you may be concerned that your child isn’t eating enough and getting the required nutrition. But please remember, it’s normal for a kid’s palate to vary from one feed or one meal to the next. There will be times when your child eats well and when they refuse.

Also please avoid worrying too much if your child hasn’t eaten much in a single meal or even in a day. It is the quantity and quality of the food that they intake over a whole week is more important. If you offer your kid a varied, healthy diet, you can be sure they’re getting all the nutrition they need.

How To Strengthen Their Appetite?

Summer heat saps away kids’ vitality and appetite too. Children are generally active and energetic, often expending more energy than what they take in. Adding to that, the summer heat, and the dehydration it invariably causes.

It becomes imperative to ensure that their ailment is adjusted accordingly, to fuel them along. Some of the things you can give them in summer should include watermelon, mint and grapes etc. Also the addition of tomatoes and cucumbers, you’ll definitely be getting plenty of water which will keep us hydrated.

Let me share some of my inhouse experiments which may relate to others as well,  have tried a modified diet for my son that includes foods of his pleasure, which not only give him the energy but also strengthen his immune system .

Here are some of the changes I made:

  • Snacks changed into fruits
  • Avoided the heat rich foods
  • Modified dairy products – Milk is very essential but in summer, tried to restrict milk. Instead give him Curd, Yogurt, Milkshake or Cold milk with homemade Rose Sharbat, or Thandai.
  • Added more homemade juices
