Parenting Ki Nayi Parampara. What Does It Mean To You?

Parenting is not as simple as it was for our parents. People adapt to many styles, and methods. For me, I believe in being the parent that I can be, and create my own Parampara for my family.

The greatest parenting challenge today is to maintain the right balance between being a modern parent and inculcating your children with traditional values. We just don’t know how much to do? What is too much? It is hard to find the balance between being too soft, or too harsh on our children.

I believe parenting is always about parents. Let’s first establish a FACT – We parents have the most significant influence on our children and help in building self-confidence, self-regulation and self-awareness skills! I believe that we need to create our own traditions, to raise a family. It can be a mix of Modern Parenting, and things that we learned through our parents. There is no rule book that says anything is the right way.

Parenting is not as simple as it was for our parents. People adapt to many styles, and methods. For me, I believe in being the parent that I can be, and create my own Parampara for my family, and what works for us as a family.

To communicate properly

I loved how my parents raised me, and I am who I am because of the values they inculcated in my day to day life. But I wish they communicated more openly. Parents need to be able to communicate openly, freely and respectfully with their children. Gone are the days when you can say, “I know better because I am the parent”. Children understand that they are heard and understood by their parents, which in turn boosts self-esteem and self-worth.

2. Establish healthy routines

I remember when I was younger, we were just told what to do, without any questions asked. It would be a part of our routine, very forcefully.

I choose to communicate, and build healthy routines for my children – from beditime, to skincare, to reading time. I also have noticed a shift in attitude when it is structured, and explained why the routine is important.

I ensure my daughter, by herself, remembers, and applies the Cetaphil Sun Kids SPF 50+ Lotion. This sun lotion designed for kids provides high protection against UVA rays with SPF 50+.

3. Rules are not just for kids

It’s my firm conviction that well-behaved kids come from well-behaved parents, not from well-behaved parents! Once, I saw someone post, ‘kids won’t speak bad words but they speak heard words’ – and I think this is so true! Live the life that you expect from your kids. It’s as simple as that. If you want your kid to be well-behaved, behave well as a parent! Full stop!

All of us are always trying to compare how we were raised and how we are going to raise our children. I think it is time we create our own traditions to raise 21st century skilled children.
