With the summer beating down on us and the markets overflowing with different varieties of mangoes, the one question that every new mom has on her mind is what’s the right time to introduce her baby to the “King of Fruits’. You and I know how tasty this sweet fruit is – so why shouldn’t the newest member of your family?

It’s recommended that you introduce mango between the age of 8-10 months.

Mangoes are actually extremely nutritious and are one of the healthiest fruits you can feed your baby. Here’s why.

Health Benefits Of Mangoes For Babies:

Fruits such as mangoes are packed with vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates and all of these are essential for your baby nutritional development.

This tropical fruit has a host of benefits that you should know about.

Good For Eyesight: The sweet and ripe mango is a wonderful source of vitamin A, Vitamin A is extremely important for your baby;'s vision development. It is also rich in Vitamins C and B, iron and potassium, all of which contribute to your baby's healthy eyesight. 

Easy To Digest: Mangoes contain enzymes and biochemicals which promote digestion. It's also a source of dietary fibre, so you don't have to worry about your little one not being able to digest this tropical fruit. Mash it or puree it and watch them slurp it up.

Fights Microbes & Infection: Mangoes help protect the body against microbial infection like cold and sinusitis. Since mangoes are rich in beta-carotene, consuming mangoes help remove the free radicals from the body and boost immunity levels. 

Good For Brain Development: Mangoes are rich in Vitamin B6 and glutamine acid which helps in brain development, memory and concentration.

  • Your baby should be at least 8 months old and should have started on semi-solid food before you introduce them to mangoes.
  • Make sure you soak the mangoes in water to remove dirt and the heat. 
  • Peel and mash the fruit so its easier for the baby to eat.
  • Make sure the mango is ripe as the unripe ones are difficult to digest.
  • Be careful with removing the fibrous hair that is sometimes found in mangoes. The baby will not be able to swallow this.
  • Watch out for any allergic reaction like a rash that may appear.

Mango Yoghurt Popsicles

You may be tempted to feed the traditional aam ras but resist the temptation. Aam ras has a lot of added sugar which may be too much for the little one yet. Salt and Sugar should be the last thing to be added to your child's food. 

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Cup Plain Yogurt/ Coconut Milk
  • 4-5 Ripe Frozen Mangoes chunks (to blend plus a few chunks for garnish)
  • 2-3 Tbsp Sugar Or Honey

Method

  • Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend to a smooth consistency.
  • Add mango chunks to the smoothie.
  • Pour the mixture into popsicle moulds.
  • Place the popsicle mould in the freezer for about 4 hours or until completely frozen.
