Over the past eight years, Kamakshi Khurana has been associated with prestigious institutions such as B.D. Somani, Muktangan Bharitya Vidya Bhavan and Mehli Mehta Music Foundation. Having completed her Visharad degree from the Lucknow University, and given her experience with both children and adults, she creates and conducts specialized workshops including sound for better concentration, music therapy and a easy and fun filled introduction to Indian Classical Music for children. She is currently the co-founder of The Sound Space.

Today she talks about how she found love for music and how she believes it is important for a child’s development.

How Music heals

Growing up in a musical household, I was introduced to various forms of sound and music at a very young age. I remember using the power of sound to my advantage in times of stress, pressure and when I was generally distracted. Riyaaz was not only for professional training but a way of a leading a holistic life. Today, after eight years of training and practising Indian classical music, sound & movement therapy, I can vouch for the various benefits that music training brings to the table and while I do hold a Visharad in Indian classical music, I strongly believe that music has innumerable benefits for children, no matter which genre.

That said, Indian culture is like a Pandora’s box, waiting to be explored. And Indian classical music is the most engaging and exciting way to introduce our vast & varied heritage to our children. We will be speaking to the team at The Sound Space and other music experts over a Hangout session tomorrow, 18th Feb at 11.00 a.m. You can watch it live on our Youtube channel here. Do send us any questions you may have on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram here.

Regional music establishes a very unique bond and helps in understanding one’s roots and rich history.

Another aspect of Indian classical music that I very keenly believe in the beautiful Guru-Shishya tradition.

For a teacher to teach an intensive art form like music, he/she must connect with the student emotionally and for that the child or shishya(student) needs to have complete faith in the teacher and this forms a beautiful relationship between the two.

The ideology behind the guru-shishya(teacher-student) tradition at The Sound Space that I co-founded with Vishala Khurana is not goal oriented, rather growth oriented. Since there is no end to learning Indian classical music, the learning process never ends and the child always strives to achieve his or her higher self instead of competing with peers and facing additional pressure. This also helps in developing patience as children gradually see that the only way they can progress is by focusing and practicing which gives them a different perspective to the learning process and they realize that here there is no instant gratification like other mediums of education.

Besides these, the more obvious reason why we encourage children to learn Indian classical music and incorporate sound therapy and movement in their academic & co-curricular routine is increased coordination between the left and the right brain by singing the ragas in the taal.

This also enhances creativity – in the process of learning Indian music the child has to understand and create different patterns of notes that are not necessarily written somewhere or taught precisely. Application and sensitivity to sound is something they are exposed to almost immediately. Children also learn to appreciate various art forms and are exposed to many types of music.

I truly believe that there is vast untapped potential in learning music through precise, scientific techniques to lead a holistic, enriched life. As an educator, I think it is my responsibility to make people aware of this knowledge and at The Sound Space, our team aims to create a very exciting curriculum for children and even parents to explore this uncharted path to see the change for themselves
