Planning the transition from US to India:

While pregnant with our first child, my husband and I decided that we were done living in the United States and would move back once our baby was a few months old. Both of us had been away from India for 10 years – in fact, New York is where we met – and we knew that if we didn’t make the transition then, we would never do it. We wanted our children to grow up close to family, and I also knew that I would never be comfortable with a situation where I had to leave my kids in the morning (at home or in daycare) and then not see them until night. I know there are millions of women who do this – and I salute them for it – but I didn’t see myself as being happy with having to choose either my work or my family completely – I knew I would need a better balance than I could attain in the position I had. My husband too was getting ready to finish his MBA, and wanted to try his hand at an entrepreneurial venture.

Once our son was born in the US, I had second thoughts. I had gotten adept at managing him on my own, strapping him into the baby carrier and taking him and my little pup for a walk. I felt I was juggling an American version of motherhood. I had begun to write and could see myself slowly moving back into the workforce regardless of whether I was, and perhaps even finding a happy balance. Plus, I had spent all my adult life in the US. Moving continents and turning things all around seemed daunting. Nonetheless, we stuck with the plan which we had committed to (especially since we had spent 3 months packing and shipping off a container load full of things, literally while my son slept). While the process of moving was exhausting, coming back to India had its own set of challenges.
