When we were school children one of the most practiced tasks was handwriting. It was considered a divine gift if one had good handwriting or beautiful penmanship. Teachers and parents were obsessed with how our handwriting looked and we were made to work long hours to make sure it looked good. As parents working and evolving in the digital space it is hard as parents to understand what is important and sometimes you feel it maybe a lost battle because even you know that these kids are growing up in an era where technology will be king. You are battling this concern because you know that hadwriting is about being neat, discipline and its a familiar set up for you from the times you are growing up. You want to hold on to those roots.
You and I probably spent a large part of time filling up pattern writing books but I am not sure if that was doing justice or if I want to ever penalise or pressurise my child.

But in this tech savvy era, our keyboards and thumbs are replacing paper and pencil and gradually penmanship is losing its importance in the 21st century. So while there are multiple views on what parents are wishing for their child in 2016, we asked a few parents on whether they think great handwriting is important for their child’s future. Our study revealed two different camps of parents divided by their views on relevance of good handwriting for kids

This is what those who are against teaching good handwriting had to say:

1. It won’t have any impact given the growing use of touch screens and keyboards by our kids, it would not matter if our children have good handwriting or not.

2. Good handwriting does not guarantee a successful career as a matter of fact there are quite a few great personalities who became world famous even after having a handwriting that is difficult to decode such as

3. A few parents living in the US seemed fine with the fact that their kids will never learn cursive handwriting at school post the adoption of the Common Core Standards as most communication now happens using digital media.

4. There are a few who feel that when a child is asked to rewrite something due to his bad handwriting it creates additional work load and kills creativity

On the other hand:

1. Practicing cursive writing helps in motor skills and cognitive development. When we put our thoughts on paper, our  senses come into play, there is a flow of thoughts, brain signals, muscle and eye co-ordination, this perfect coordination between mind  and body  is not possible while typing on a device.

2. Some feel good handwriting is also important when it comes to writing exam sheets or university forms.

What the child understands:

1. Presentation is key and not my thoughts or responses

What we feel:

Regardless of the way my kids cross their Ts or dot their Is, I should be able to understand how they put their thoughts together. And that’s one reason I love and cherish the handwritten cards my kids make every Mother’s day.
