A million thoughts run through your mind when you are an expectant mother. From the right diet to the perfect fitness routine, to planning the child's name and nursery, we don't leave any stone unturned, right?! I was talking to my friend who is an interior designer about doing up my baby's nursery. From the conversation I had with her over coffee, I must confess there were many new things I learnt in the process.

Did you know that every colour had a particular influence on your mood and how you feel? For instance, red and yellow are associated with making you hungry. Your favourite fast food joints are often painted in this colour! We often go in with the cliched pink vs blue colour debate when settling for the baby's nursery.

Fun fact – as early as in 9th century, blue was often assigned to girls as it was perceived to be a dainty colour and pink- a stronger colour- was for boys. Surprising, right? Over the years, pink, a close second to red, that is often associated with romance and love, got associated with girls, who are considered more emotional. The tonal topsy-turvy continued over decades and pink for girls and blue for boys was here to stay.

I found the conversation really interesting. Here's all I learnt about choosing the right colours for my baby's nursery:

  • Red- is a bold yet 'hot' colour. If you are very particular and you like it- keep it to a minimum in your child's room.
  • Yellow is all about sunny and bright – Play it right and ensure you don't max out on the brighter shades of it in the room.
  • Opt for shades of blue since that are known to decrease feelings of anxiety- something your newborn will feel a lot in the initial weeks.
  • It is said that shades of green help in better concentration and help soothe a child.
  • Many parents choose lighter hues of purple since it combines the pink and blue down to a neutral stand. Light shades of purple is another popular soothing colour.
  • This one is a no-brainer. Pastel shades of pink are popular with babies and help them feel warm and comfortable.
  • There are some parents who love going all-white indicating serenity and peace. But our suggestion would be to go for creamier shades rather than strong white.

Be it whatever colour you choose, make sure, you think through it carefully. Choose softer shades of the colour you zero in on and definitely avoid darker shades. But the job isn't quite done there. Just like choosing the right colour for your baby's nursery, it is pivotal parents spend that extra minute zeroing in on the right paint for the room. We were clear on our priorities- wanted to choose a paint that shields my little one's walls from bacteria, and other harmful pollutants and also one that is easy to clean and maintain.

That's when I was suggested to try Royale Health Shield by Asian Paints, that came up with promises for my family, that sounded true and convincing. The Silver Ion Technology that is the USP of this paint, kills 99%# of infection-causing bacteria on the painted surfaces and absorbs formaldehyde, thereby reducing the indoor air pollution and giving my child's room cleaner air.

For a room, that my newborn will probably end up spending more than 3/4ths of her day, it only seemed appropriate, we go in for the trusted name. And what's more? With the Silver Ion Technology that comes recommended by the Indian Medical Association* the choice was just easy to make for us, as new parents. There will come the time, where she will spill/spray open ketchup bottles or her elder sister's paints. Thank god for Royale Health Shield's washable and stain-resistant paints that will help me retain my sanity, as a mom!
