Make your very own galaxy with ingredients from your kitchen cupboard

The scorching summer sun is keeping the kids indoors already and I need to keep finding ways to keep them gainfully engaged. We spend hours playing with blocks, LEGO and play dough. But store-bought playdough gets hard pretty quickly when in the open. With my kids at least, that’s always the case. They always get excited about some other activity and the playdough gets left sitting in some corner and dries up to become rock solid. I have to say good quality playdough is really not cheap to keep buying.

So we decided that it was time to make some of our own. Our project for the week was to make playdough with ingredients that are inexpensive and kid-friendly for your child’s sensitive skin.  Did you know you can make playdough in next to no time with ingredients you have in your kitchen cupboards? We made beautiful glittery galaxy playdough that was just so much pretty to look at and so much fun to make stuff out of.

Watch the video to learn how to make your own Galaxy Play Dough. We would love to see pictures of how it turned out in the comments below.

Materials Needed

  • 2 Cups Plain Flour
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar
  • 1.5 Cups Boiling Water
  • Food colouring – Blue 3 drops Red 2 drops
  • Glitter – different colours
  • Tiny Stars

Method

  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl – the flour, salt and cream of tartar
  • Make a well using your finger and add oil, food colouring and boiling water slowly.
  • Stir continuously until it all comes together and forms a sticky clump.
  • Allow it to cool down. Then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. It is extremely important to keep kneading the dough until it reaches the right consistency.
  • If it remains a little sticky then add a little more flour until just right. If you think it feels too dry then add more water.
  • Sprinkle in different coloured glitter and give a nice knead.
  • Finish it by adding mini stars.
  • Store it in an airtight container.
