Four Ways The New Maternity Benefit Act Will Change Life For New Moms In India

If you are a new mom wondering how to tackle the new responsibility bestowed on you without causing much harm to your career, then here’s some good news! In an attempt to prevent women from bidding goodbye to their careers soon after having a baby, an all new Maternity Benefit Act has been passed by the Parliament.

The bill provides the benefit of a full-paid absence from work to take care of her child soon after birth. Here’s how new mommies will benefit from the new bill.

1. Duration

The Bill has increased the duration of the maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks for the first two children. However, the 12-week policy will hold good for mothers adopting a child below three months of age as well as commissioning mothers (one whose egg is used to create an embryo planted in surrogate’s womb).

2. Creche Facility

Every company with more than 50 employees must provide creche facilities inside the office premises or within a 500-metre radius. The bill also permits mom to make four visits to the creche to take care of or feed the baby during working hours.

3. Work From Home

The employer may also permit a woman to work from home if it is possible to do so.

4. Gender Neutral

The bill is gender neutral, in the sense that it also permits a male employee to take his child to a crèche, if it is far away from the mother’s workplace.
