While I was thinking of the title for this post so many options cropped up – 5 reasons why you should watch the movie if you are a parent, why Hichki is a movie every parent must watch and so many more.

But then I thought to myself how will I do justice to the learning I got from this absolutely wonderful, real and not at all melodramatic Hichki? Every movie I decide to watch with my kids I want them to understand there is a balance between reality and fiction.  So like professor Wadia says in the movie,” it’s tough to be students, it’s tough to learn”.

That’s exactly the reason why I say this movie has lessons for every parent and child –

Acceptance: It’s very important for us as parents to accept our kids the way they are and for our kids to accept people with disabilities, syndromes, those who come from different economic strata and social structure. When we don’t judge, we open our minds.

Embrace Your Flaws:  When we accept our shortcomings then it’s much easier for others to do that as well. If we don’t accept them and take them for what they are, others will never embrace it either. We should help our kids understand that people are flawed, including their parents. It’s hard to be superhuman.

There Are No Bad Students Just Bad Teachers: I know this sounds very pedantic but I definitely believe that children are the ones who need to be engaged and kept entertained. For example, when kids throw tantrums. They only do that to seek attention. But if we keep them busy and mindfully engaged, then the tantrums are usually at their minimum.

Empathy: Both parents and kids need to be empathetic towards people who are less privileged. If everybody had equal opportunities and the same education opportunities then there would be no unhappy people.

Believe In Yourself: Teach your child to believe in themselves; circumstances should not dictate their future. Help them to realize that they are the masters of their own future and working hard is the way to get there and make it a success.  A disability or an economic hurdle should not stop them from dreaming big and reaching for the stars.
