It was a family friend’s wedding. And in the eleventh hour after we were all dressed to go, I remembered the gift. Since it was last minute and there really wasn’t any time to run to the stores and buy the first thing I see, I decided to use the age old idea of recycling! I grabbed a gift from the attic and started dutifully removing the sender’s label and adding my name to it (agreed, shameless!). My mom walked in and in all her endless wisdom asked me if I knew who the original sender was. I bent down and took the crumpled card and to my surprise, it was the person whose wedding I was going to attend! In all the last minute hurry, I hadn’t noticed her name, let alone plan a nice gift for her! And that’s when I realised the many gifts that were lying in the attic (from my wedding) would have faced a similar fate of being recycled, redundant, and frankly- useless ones!

The Great Indian Tamasha:

Do you remember what you gifted your office colleague on the occasion of their second son’s third birthday party? Nope? The good news is, neither do they! The concept of recycling works perfectly well for the “gifts industry” in our country. Just change the wrapper, add a new card, and you are done! Do a quick check in your house and tell me how many of those baby shower or birthday gifts did you really like or find useful?

Almost every Indian household has a 3-D vase painting with bright coloured flowers, probably three similar Ganesha idols made of grains, and how about everyone’s favourite – silver lamps! When my sister organized a birthday party for my niece, she counted 3 identical LEGO sets, two cooking sets, and 4 Chhota Bheem stuffed toys- all for a child who will hardly play them for a few more months before she gets bored! What is then the purpose of these boring gifts when neither the gifter nor the receiver is happy?

What is it about gifts that Indians like (and dislike!) so much? Our grandparent’s have it right. Instead of breaking their head about something the new generation will appreciate, they just gift money! But, then you can’t go about gifting currency to all and sundry. It would seem rude and impersonal. Why has a concept of gift registry not sunk in yet in India? Are we still under the age-old purview that it is rude for someone to ask for the gifts themselves? Wrapp’d is here to change that perspective for you.

Hosts:

Create a registry in their website/app and save the details of the function including date, venue, theme, etc. If you are already keen on what you would like to receive as gifts, go ahead and shoot your list! You could also chose from their well-categorised list that helps customers chose their wish-list. Share it with your loved ones once you are done.

Guests:

Once you receive an email notification from your friend’s invite, you can purchase a gift from their registry or if you are a pro, you can even suggest new gifts to your friend! Duplication is ruled out as you will be indicated about which gifts from the registry are already bought by other invitees. The gift can be purchased through the link in Wrapp’d or through their partners and notified through Wrapp’d.

What we love:

  • Gift registry is still a fledgling industry in the country, despite being a unique idea. The ease and flexibility offered to both hosts and guests makes Wrapp’d a stand-out choice.
  • The fact that I chose the useful gifts I need when I throw a party is sure to click with the customers. No more boring crystals and cookery sets!
  • Their wide collection gets our thumbs up! Starting from kids toys to precious gold items, you can find everything under Wrapp’d!
  • In addition to the collections, their handpicked and curated lists are a time-saver for many of us. One glance at the list and we know what to expect from our list of invites.
  • Products from most of the leading brands such as Amazon, Flipkart, Firstcry, Jabong and Pepperfry.

What we would have to wait & watch:

  • As exciting as the idea sounds, we would really have to wait and see how the Indian market opens up to this. This is a new concept that involves the mindset of the people and we would have to give it some time.
  • Gifts, in India (especially for occasions like wedding and baby shower) are seen more as a ‘blessing’ from the elders than anything else. To put a tag on that, might not be a welcome move, at least for all parts of the society.
