It all began at a Santa Cruz preschool when a five-year-old hit his classmate. When his teacher asked him to apologise, the child refused and innocently spouted the nursery rhyme 'Piggy on the Railway'. It went like this: Piggy on the railway picking up stones; down came an engine and broke his bones; "Ah!" said Piggy, "that's not fair"; "Oh!" said the engine driver, "I don't care!" Taken aback by a five-year-old's use of a popular and seemingly innocuous children's poem to justify an act of violence, the teachers of Podar Jumbo Kids realised that a lot of nursery rhymes had similar references of aggression, discrimination and mass deaths – many believe that the poem 'Ring a Ring o'Roses' is a reference to The Great Plague that killed thousands in England in 1665. "Imagine a school assembly that starts with kids singing about going hunting and catching a fox, then putting him in a box and never letting him go. We have been thoughtlessly teaching violence and cruelty to our kids through traditional rhymes and stories," a teacher Melanie Mathai said. The result was eight slim, colourful books with illustrations by the kids and the newly interpreted verse created by, who knows, the future Ruskin Bonds and Salman Rushdies. SORRY!
