My own vacations as a 4 or 5-year-old were spent in a tiny village with reclas (horse tongas) at the railway station. The auto rickshaws came much later. There were no screens, just lots of open space, streets with no vehicles and neighbours that sat outside for hours every day. I have watched eat hay, make dung and repeat for hours on end. The real extent of my experience did not occur to me until I looked at our urban city cows make dung and realized how different it was in colour and texture.

Imagine this for a minute, it takes me 25 minutes to go from my home to our gate when I walk with my kids, but in that time they have shown me a ladybug, a bee, 3 butterflies, tree pods, fallen flowers, red and brown dirt and simple patterns in the floor. Now, if I rushed them we’d miss seeing all this, including the joy of discovery and observation.

While most of us are worried about how we are going to keep our kids busy these vacations, I’ve noticed my kids are happiest doing simple things that the husband or I are involved in – making pancakes, dancing in the living room, jumping on the bed are the most favourite things to do for my 5 and 2-year-olds.

So, here are 25 things you can do with your child in your home, your balcony or outdoors whichever you choose or have the convenience of doing. The memory of having you involved in these simple activities and the joy of doing things together will make these vacations really fun for your child.

The key is to keep it simple, doable and fun!

Here’s what we will be doing! Go ahead take your pick from our list of ideas!

1. Paint our faces

2. Build a pillow fort (anything played on the bed is a hit in our house!)

3. Paint a shirt (or just any piece of cloth, it is fun and you can wear it!)

4. Make a tree swing (my kids are really into rough rope tied simple tree swings that you can use to monkey around!)

5. Pick flowers every day

6. Visit a nursery

7. Plant a seed and watch it grow

8. Go to the beach and get those tiny feet wet

9. Head out on a trek or trail

10. Have a picnic breakfast/lunch outdoors (we have done it in our balcony too, it’s just as fun and a lot better than indoors!)
