This year the BMC elections campaign went door to door and followed a personalised approach with voters. So I was not surprised to see the voting candidate come right to my home, asking me to vote for her/him. They followed a rather predictable, practised drill. First, you would hear noises of them approaching, then they would ring the bell and deliver their 5-minute rehearsed campaign speech littered liberally with everything they promised to do when in power. Then with folded arms they would ask you to vote for them while one of their assistants handed you a pamphlet.

Now, as a busy mom consumed with parenting duties, I absolutely loathed going up to answer the door a few extra times daily. Personally, I don’t follow politics much, but if you asked me, I would definitely cast my vote for the person who makes my life as a parent, a tab bit easier.

Here are 5 things party candidates need to do to win a Mumbai parent’s vote.

1) Please stop scaring my child with deafening drums and heavy beat Bollywood songs during festivals and campaign season.

3) Pregnant women and bumpy roads are NOT a good mix! In fact, potholes on Mumbai roads were in the news for triggering labour in a seven-months pregnant woman!

3) Give me a footpath so I can walk with my baby in the stroller/pram. If I was walking down this road, what would I do when I reached the end…?

5) A children’s park is supposed to be child-friendly right? How about some decent equipment? Is it too much to ask to not throw alcohol bottles in the middle of a park?
