Organizing a party this Holi:

Go old school and informal and just call everyone you want to invite. Or if you want to go a little innovative, print your invitation cards and attach a packet of gulal or a pichkari to it. Make sure your invite mentions that your party is child friendly.

Don’t even think of having a Holi party indoors! You must have this one outdoors. Go as simple as possible with the decor. Cut-outs of colourful hands, pichkaris, and splash could work well. Also, blow up colourful balloons to brighten up the place.

  • Along with traditional Holi food like gujiyas, laddoos and thandai make sure you have a variety of fingr food like mini pizzas, French fries, sandwiches etc. that your young guests will enjoy.
  • You could make a tray of colourful milkshakes too!
  • You could dip cheese into different marinades and arrange them on a platter for a colourful snack the kids will love!
  • Arrange for water, serving dishes, plates and spoons before the party starts so that you avoid having to go indoors covered in colour.
  • If you are planning to serve bhaang, make sure it is way out of the children’s reach. Make a separate table for drinks.

Games:

While the adults will indulge in some colour play and then indulge in some socialising, kids need activities planned to have some serious Holi fun!

Arrange for a table where you could do a variety of fun activities like spray painting, bubble painting, finger painting and tie-n-dye painting. Throw a big sheet of paper or cloth on a table or on a wall and let the kids go wild! Provide them with various paint rollers, brushes and stamps to create their own masterpiece on the wall.

Maybe hang up a sheet of paper or cloth and have children throw colours or water balloons at it from a designated spot. After all, Holi is all about having messy fun!

Pre-party Safety & Care:

  1. Cover the passage area and all the furniture indoors with old bed sheets or plastic sheets as guests will enter the house to use the washroom.
  2. Make sure you apply oil liberally on your child’s body, face, and hair so that the colour doesn’t penetrate deep inside the skin. Olive oil, coconut oil and almond oil all work very well.
  3. Apply a layer of moisturiser or sunscreen over the oil.
  4. Tie cool bandanas to protect your hair and scalp. Make sure kids wear comfortable clothes. Pants or shorts work best.
  5. Make sure the kids are always monitored by adults.
  6. Only buy organic herbal colours
  7. A first aid kit should be kept handy around the venue.
  8. Arrange for some towels to keep the little ones warm as they might start feeling cold.
  9. Keep the kids well hydrated

Post-party hacks to clean up and how to remove Holi colour from the body.

  1. After the party pack and put away all the accessories and decor and wash down the entire area as soon as possible before the colour sets in.
  2. Before taking a shower apply another layer of oil or moisturizer all over your body and wait for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Make a paste of gram flour, curd, honey, and almond oil. Use this paste to scrub your face and body. Rinse it off with cold water. This will help wash off the colour.
  4. Use a mild shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair. Don’t try to remove all the colour with one wash. Over-shampooing will dry your hair. It may take close to a week to get the colour off completely.
  5. Apply a thick layer of baby cream all over the face and body after your shower to prevent the skin from getting dry.
