Diwali is always extra special with little kids around. Preparations are all done keeping in mind just how much they will love the festival and if you are anything like me you have already started telling your kids little tidbits about why we celebrate the festival. But what if you are a new mom and your baby is too young to tell you she is stressed out with the smoke and the noise and all the extra stimulation?

Fret not. Kidsstoppress and Himalaya Baby Care  bring you a list of 5 tips to make sure you don’t forget the little things that will go a long way to make sure your baby is comfortable through Diwali.

1) Keep your festive clothing comfortable

You might be carrying the baby more than you normally do during Diwali so it is important to make sure your baby isn’t getting scratched and bothered by heavy sequins on your clothes or sharp edges on your jewellery. Keep your look festive but simple. You could also carry an extra pair of clothes that you can change into quickly. Alternatively if you think your outfit will be harsh on baby’s sensitive skin, make sure to carry extra burp cloths, or sleep sacks to place over your shoulder to make sure baby is comfortable.

2)As much as you can stick to your baby’s schedule

Every baby has a set schedule and develops a routine. Diwali, with all the new faces and extra noise is already stressful for baby. Make sure to follow the same schedule you had before the festival with your baby and this will go a long way in reducing tantrums. Just handle the way the day progresses and attend to hunger and nap tantrums first.

3) Keep ear muffs or cotton balls handy

Diwali is the festival of lights, but it is also the festival of noise. Fireworks can scare your baby and lead to loud, crying fits. When you begin to hear crackers, retreat to a quiet, inner room and keep away from the noise as much as possible. You could also use ear muffs or cotton to muffle the noise.

4) Don’t feel shy to nurse on the go

Feel free to nurse in public. It is very important to not feel shy while breastfeeding in public. Diwali includes travelling and a baby can get hungry anytime. Make sure to carry your nursing cover or breastfeeding cloak.

5) Must include in the diaper bag for Diwali

Diapers: Always carry extra diapers in your diaper bag. You never know when there might be an emergency.

Diaper rash cream: Carry a tube of diaper rash cream as rashes could lead to discomfort for the baby.

Wipes: Always carry wet wipes for the baby. They could even pull double duty in an emergency.

Moisturizer: There is a possibility that your baby’s skin may get dry. Make sure it is well nourished and moisturized. Ensure you carry your baby lotion at all times.

Also make sure to carry:

  • Burp cloths
  • Cotton sheets
  • Changing mats
  • Swaddle cloth
  • An extra set of clothes for baby and mom
  • Breastfeeding cloak
