It was a Sunday evening in my house – dinner done, the day’s chores and errands all checked, I finally snuggled up on the couch to watch my favourite sitcom- Friends along with my husband. My child was busy playing with her toys, tiring herself out just before bed. Monica and Chandler were explaining why they wanted a big house- with the park and swing in the front and a place where their kid can hear an ice cream truck passing by. The other friends tease them saying that they are probably searching for a house in the 1950s! That line got us laughing and thinking at the same time.

Were we also thinking on the same lines of Monica and Chandler? We had always dreamt of a large garden with swings and slides for our little one to play with. A place where our daughter could read her favourite storybook in a shady spot between the trees. But then we settled for an urban life- one in the midst of concrete jungles, where there was one common park for over 50 families, where the swings and slides were already occupied by the older ones whenever my little one went to play. She would return home with a sad face, and we would oblige her with some television time and screen entertainment.

There are few properties that boast of vast open places whereas there are many that speak highly off their high rises and lobbies. What do parents today want for their kids? A lot of want green open space, trees, a place to breathe, a place to run and play and a place kids can turn to when they want to play catch, or hide and seek. This does not mean driving to a park in the next suburb or driving outside the city every time you wanted a breath of fresh air. When my husband and I were talking about our common dreams for our daughter, we stumbled upon Godrej Properties.

So many of us wax eloquent about how it is essential to weaning kids off-screen time. We read news reports about the risk of obesity in today’s children as they hardly get any quality outdoor time. As parents, if we want our kids off gadgets and to bond with nature- it is our responsibility to provide them- the ambience for the same. So why not look to stay a property that offers vast green spaces and a park for children?

Think about it. In today’s fast-paced world, with development on all fronts- social, economic and cultural, are we racing ahead at the cost of our kids’ precious childhood? Is it even a worthy trade-off? Will the basic demands of a small garden, green trees and clean air, soon become a luxury for the next generation? Is it frankly, too much of an ask? Isn’t it imperative for us as parents to insist on these crucial things when we finalise a house?

Let’s give our kids the childhood, they were meant to enjoy. Give them the environment we would love to see them grow in.
