As a parent to a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, I noticed a lot of buzz about the following books in the parenting community:

  1. Introduction to Globe and Maps
  2. Dolly, My Dolphin

Both of these are a part of “A World of Discovery-A Children’s Interactive World Map Series”. These books have been very carefully curated with a lot of interactive activities, innovative crafts, and colouring and sticker activities. The elementary concepts of Geography have been presented in an extremely child-friendly manner with lots of hands-on activities.

What is it about?

  • The first unit talks about the globe and flat world maps, compass, cardinal directions, cartography and various types of maps. We especially loved the way the author has illustrated how the peel of an orange (otherwise a sphere) can be flattened. She then made a parallel anatomy to the spherical globe and flat map. These practical lessons go a long way to develop the child’s understanding.
  • The second unit introduces the concept of oceans and seas. It has various interactive activities that enable the children to learn the names of the oceans and major seas in a fun manner.
  • The icing on the cake is probably the technology integration and the augmented reality component done by linking relevant children songs by way of codes that can be scanned to link to the website.

I found these books appropriate to introduce elementary geography concepts to pre-schoolers. Click here to buy the books.
