Ear piercing for babies in India

So this weekend saw 2 of my friends regretting that they hadn’t taken the effort to get their girls ears pierced early on. This is a question you leave it to the pediatrician than your mom these days. In my case I went by what my mom and logic said. I did it early on with both my daughters, as early as 3 months. You can obviously read up on various baby portals including Babycentre . The Latino culture just like in India believes that earring is a sign of feminism and believes that the baby girl should have her ears pierced early on so its less painful. The world over there are debates on whether its cruel or early vanity or intruding on someone else’s right to decide. I took that decision for my kids like I take a lot of other decisions given that they would eventually love wearing earrings and it will be less painful for them. If they decide to not have their piercings any more than its going to be quite simple anyways. I am infact anticipating more piercings in the times to come so I am sure my girls are not going to mind this at all. Super model Gisele received a lot of comments when she posted this picture of 7 month old Vivian with her ears pierced and defending her stance. While clearly I am no doctor to be recommending this and just a fellow mom, here is how we went about doing this. 1. Find a trusted person/place in your vicinity who specialize in piercings for infants 2. Choose the person who will do the piercing either by directly inserting the metal wire or with a piercing gun at whatever age you decide 3. Make sure you try doing it between 3- 5 months when the child is still exclusively breastfed or on Formula Milk. Some foods in the Indian context can cause  alittle bit of a swelling 4. Pick a time when your child sleeps through for a longer stretch like after the morning massage and feed. 5. Swaddle your baby so he doesn’t move too much to distract the person who is doing the piercing 6. Take someone along, moms just cant see their babies cry. Benefits: 1. Hurts less as the skin is really tender 2. Baby doesn’t move too much so reduces chances of an accident 3. The baby doesn’t touch the earring too much as Indians prefer swaddling their babies Watch out for: 1. If its just a wire it often gets stuck in your clothes or bath towels. So be careful 2. Make sure its all sterilized to avoid any infections. carry your sanitizer so you can get the person who is piercing the ears to wash and sanitize his hands. For first time parents it may seem traumatic but it’s a lot easier and almost like a vaccination prick. If you haven’t already then its time you ponder over the decision and make it soon.
