The daughter is absolutely loving her summer holidays and all the unstructured time she gets especially in the last 2 weeks. She loves her new school for the coming few weeks thats called home and a teacher who spends time with her teaching her real life experiences even when all other institutions are closed. The teacher for a lifetime and who is never on holiday is called "mommy' So we have  a lot of stuff  planned for our holidays and the first thing on that list is to explore the city of Mumbai. Here is the list of places we have listed and plan to head out with our backpacks atleast 2  times a week and explore all that we can and do all stuff touristy this summer. Here is our first list on places to visit with kids  in colonial Mumbai Landmarks to visit in old colonial mumbai:

  1. Rajabhai Tower: If its a big yes for the Big Ben then why not the Rajabhai Tower
  2. Asiatic library
  3. Sassoon docks: This is one fun trip where the kids will get to see a lot of different stuff and a whole new world.
  4. Prince of wales museum: Read our review on the museum and trust us when we say the Bird & Animal section is really good. On your way out treat your kids to some great knick knacks and books at the must visit museum shop.
  5. University building: The Bombay University building is so beautiful with great architecture that it calls for some clicks for sure.
  6. Gateway of India: What is Mumbai without the Gateway of India. So moms please make the effort and visit the Gateway of India. Dont forget to feed the pigeons, have some Nariyal Pani and take an instant photo with the many photowallas there. You may also want to take the boat ride and to know more about that click right here Gateway read our review here
  7. Marine Drive: Walk along the Queens Necklace and sit by the rocks, jump from the parapet, pick up the almond flowers or simply watch the sunset and wonder where has it gone now. We love Marine Drive and its one place that we drive by often stop by very rarely unless you stay in the vicinity. You will be surprised how much kids love this place and just love running on the promenade. Try the horse chariot ride beginning at the Oberoi hotels with your child even if its always been on your wishlist. Its not too expensive and you can bargain it down to Rs 100 for a round.
  8. Flora Fountain: Walk along flora fountain and let them see the landmark in the business district that gets so many people to throng this place in the morning.  Experience the lovely buildings and little by lanes of Fountain. Stop by at Kitab Khana for some AC, books and some treats from the lovely cafe there. Its a great experience to just see buildings with such high ceilings in Mumbai.
  9. Board the Churchgate local: Keep this for the weekend when this place is a lot less crazy or try the afternoon slot. Let the kids buy their tickets and hop on a local train to a station that suits you. We actually tried the lunch time when it was a lot less crazy. Pick a book or paper from the news stall, a bottle of water from the vendor and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
  10. Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus or VT station: We actually experienced this one on our way to Matheran. Read review on a child friendly holiday to Matheran here and trust me there is so much to actually see at this one. Right from the waiting area to the numerous platforms, the coolies, the goods trains, the whistle blowing, the ATM, the old vintage clocks and lots more.
  11. High court: The best way to explain to your child about lawyers and how they look is right here. Just climb those stairs and even though you cannot enter inside the building its fun to pose all touristy here.
  12. BPT Garden: This garden boasts of some wonderful and rare species of flowers that you will otherwise find in Mumbai. The best time to probably visit this place would be before 11 am or after 5 p.m.
  13. Jehangir Art Gallery: If you think Art is not what kids enjoy think again, thats the first cativity that they love doing. Explore colours and pictures at the gallery.
  14. Cooperage: Opposite the Mantralaya and adjoining the Traffic Park dont miss on a horse ride at this garden with your kids.
  15. National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai: Across Regal theatre this one is beautiful, with not only great paintings and art but also great ambiance. Those huge ceilings, long corridors and if you are lucky a great documentary playing
  16. Mantralaya: You may just walk by this one but important to show them what the mantralaya does, means and is.
  17. Dhobhi Ghaat: If you wonder why do you need to visit a laundromat as large as this then you must think again. India is a country so diverse that we are blessed to see something like this. The daughter went crazy when she actually got to see the sight of so many washermen washing at the same time. Its an experience and you must visit it.
  18. INS Vikrant
  19. The dabbawallahs: While you tak ethe Churchgate local if you take it like us during lunchtime you will be able to show your child the efficiency of these men at work. I remember the daughter saw some of this  at the Mumbai Meri Jaan concert and she still remembers a lot of the stuff
  20. Colaba Causeway: shop around, eat, look and have fun as you just walk around the best shopping area in Mumbai.
  21. Koliwada: See the fishermens den and how they work
  22. Ride in a double decker bus: This one just cannot be missed. Either try the open MTDC bus or just a regular double decker bus.
  23. The Taj Mahal Hotel
  24. Taraporewala Aquarium: This is a not in the best condition but is your only hope to showing them the under water world in Mumbai. So please go ahead

We actually have some still left on our list and we promise to share those with you. But it was a fun experience and we have spread the visit over a couple of days. We stopped by at a lot of roadside stalls, some quaint cafes and popular patisseries for quick bites. We stopped by at old book stalls and sat down to hunt for some good bargains. We made a necklace each for ourselves at the famous bead guy in the Cotton world lane. So go explore the colonial Mumbai with your children and stay tuned for our next series on explore Mumbai with kids.
