Ramona, mother of two school-going kids feels the early morning strain almost every day. Moms of school-going kids, or those struggling to leave the house on time for work, will all understand the frustrations and the usual ‘panic’ that gets triggered during ‘rush’ morning hours.

It starts with gentle coaxing, followed by threats and finally literally dragging the child out of bed. This is followed by the ‘Get dressed’ series of exchanges. Beginning with ‘get dressed, you’re going to be late,’ at almost five-minute intervals for the next half an hour, till an exasperated mom begins undressing the kids. Then the high-pitched notes of discontent and argument start with ‘What’s for breakfast?’ Scrambled eggs or pancakes are discussed, while the hassled mom chooses to ignore the demands and stick to easy cereals and milk.

However, there is still hope! A couple of clever back-to-school morning hacks can make things a wee-bit simpler for moms of school-going children. Let’s see how:

Gradual Transition To Earlier Bedtimes/Wake Times

After a long term-break holiday, it takes some time to get into the regular rhythm of life. Hence, it is best to spend the last couple of weeks before school transitioning into the new session. Advance the bedtime and start to wake kids up earlier as well.

Teach Morning Routine With Fun Sheet

You can print and laminate the self-care practice sheet and keep it in the children’s room for the kids to glance through first thing in the morning. This will help them realize the importance of their morning routine and inculcate discipline in them from an early age.

Label a hanging closet organizer with daily outfits

You can label a hanging closet organizer with the days of the week.  Fill it up with outfits at the beginning of the week and the kids know exactly what to wear including their school uniforms if any.

Hang The Day’s Outfit

You can put a hanger on the wall with a colourful tag indicating the outfit the kid will wear the next morning. Hang it up each night and avoid the morning fuss.

Encourage Kids At Breakfast Table

Encourage kids to share their meal ideas in advance and ask them to give simple Recipes.

Create A Lunch-Packing Station

You can set up an organised lunch packing area with jam, butter, bread spread, boiled eggs and potatoes, lettuce, sprouts, mayo etc. – all ready and waiting. The kids can assist you while you prepare their lunch packs.

Set Up Storage Lockers

Individual lockers can be a time-saving device where children can keep their backpacks, coats and shoes in the same spot every day and they can be arranged on time. This helps avoid the rush hour madness.

Read Aloud At The Breakfast Table

Reading the morning newspaper or excerpts from any book help kids stay at the table instead of getting distracted and running around during that morning feeding time!
