Did you think of this? Ok so I just thought of this the other day when I realized that I spend so much of my time changing my daughter. Ok so there are days when its easy there are days when its tough. But what I realized that this could also be fun and this too can be a learning experience. For all those who wonder why I talk so much to my child is because over the last 3 years I have learnt that she listens. Their subconscious mind is so strong that the more you talk the more they learn. So let them be, expose them to as much of life as you can.

Coming back to clothes I think its a perfect medium for parents to use to introduce, size, color, number and purpose to young children.  Here is how,

1. Patterns & Motifs(Art): Most of our clothes or theirs too have patterns & motifs on it. They can learn shapes, figures & colours. This way they end up learning most of the colours, e.g. Peach, Mauve, Lavender, Fuchsia, Indigo and so many more

2. Size: When I tell my daughter that this is now small and we should give it away to your baby sister she understands that some clothes are big and some are small. You can also compare papas shirt is big, mamas is medium and baby’s is small

3. Textures & Fabrics: Different materials make them feel different textures, fabrics. Raingear is nylon, winter is wool, velvet  is smooth, cotton/muslin is soft, Georgette/chiffon is translucent, some fabrics are transparent and you can see through while some are opaque. this is really easy with the dupatta especially when you cover your face with your dupatta and do peekaboo.

4. Sorting: Ok this is when she can really help. So every evening once the clothes are folded we have to sort them out and thats when Ineed her assistance. So she dodges her memory and tells me this is dadis, dads, mamas, papas and this is mine. She also carries them without dropping to the respective rooms. Ok so I am not giving her a huge pile but just a few smaller ones and I tread right behind so the folded clothes dont fall down and I dont need to do it all over again. This is a simple exercise but she definitely learns a lot and more importantly enjoys it. we also sometimes when we have a little more time sort them by colour or by tops, bottoms, napkins, etc

5. If your child is old enough she can even count them for you or help you give the clothes to the dhobi.

6. Memory Game: We also try to place where we bought a specific dress or top from and talk about that holiday or that aunt or that moment all over again so we never forget.

7. Coordination Skills – Important coordination skills are learned with clothing.  Working with buttons, zippers and even Velcro help children become more coordinated and self- sufficient.

8. Dramatic Skills – I use to wear my moms saree when I was a child and my daughter wheres my dupatta. Some games are timeless and role plays are the best for children as it helps them communicate, try and be different personalities, explore what that personality does. Sow hen the dupatta is on she sometimes is a doctor and treating patients with her little med kit or is ateacher taking attendance and knows she needs a paper & register and her slate & chalk. Sometimes its mommy whose goingto office and she quickly grabs her purse and puts on my sandals & grabs her baby computer & mobile phone. A cook thats a staple with girls and we are always cooking different stuff wearing our little aprons and baby utensils. Always encourage this. Its a great learning experience for children.

9. Language: Clothes always bring about the best in me and the best language skills in your child. Its the best way of introducing different words. Rough, smooth, soft, silky, smart, bright, dull, dark, matching, pairing, short, long and fill in those adjectives too.

10. Problem Solving – Choosing between two outfits can help children learn to make choices too.
