As a Delhiite, I must confess that I have the best of both worlds. On one hand, we have the largest of malls, housing International names sprawling all over the city to get you the best products in the branded world. On the other hand, we have the bargainer’s haven- Sarojini Nagar Market!

The Shopper’s Paradise

Sarojini Nagar Market, in South Delhi, is known for selling fashionable export surplus goods which are branded and yet, you can get them at 1/4th their original price! You’ll find all the international brands here – whether it’s GAP, Tommy, Zara, Levis or Armani. You’re sure to find something ( actually quite a lot) that you’ll like.

Besides, a haven for school and college students, the Sarojini Nagar Market is a wonderful place for moms too. The rate at which my children outgrow their clothes or ruin them, buying expensive stuff is not always feasible. So when the weather begins to change, you’ll find the market buzzing with moms looking for clothes for their kids. If you’re not sure of why you should be making a trip to SN ( as it is fondly called), read on below to find out.

I would recommend SN to expectant moms check it out.  With your size destined to change over 9 months, buying stylish but inexpensive clothing may not be a bad idea.

The 5 things I bought when I went to Sarojini Nagar Market

Jeans

Just walk around the place to get a feel of it. The shops have GAP, Tommy Hilfiger and UCB jeans at really cheap prices. I picked up jeans for my 7 and 10-year old for Rs 400 each. Now it can’t get better than that right? Whether you want drain pipe jeans, hipsters or regular fitted ones, you have a wide range to choose from. They are branded, stylish and easy on the pocket.

Track Pants

Kids, who spend a lot of time playing outside also need track pants and a lot of them! My son rips his tracks at the knees at least once every 2 weeks when he’s playing in the park. Are you looking for flannel track pants, fleece lined tracks or just plain cotton ones? You can find them all at SN. Their prices range from Rs 100 for local stuff to Rs 350 for brands like Old Navy and Mothercare.

Jackets

I know winter is almost over but you can never have too many jackets and woollies. We bought really smart fleece lined Old Navy hoodies for when it’s not too cold. You’ll find warm clothes for kids from 0 to 12 years quite easily. The jackets are branded so you know the kind of quality you’re picking up. Hoodies, bomber jackets, fleeced lined onesies or sweaters from Carters, GAP, Benetton and Mothercareare available in plenty here.

Dresses

Girls look so pretty in dresses. My daughter is pretty tall for a 10-year-old, but we did manage to find some really nice dresses that she can wear once the weather turns warmer. If you have a younger daughter, I promise you’ll be coming home with bags full of lovely frocks and dresses. You’ll find both cute and smart frocks that your little girl will love to preen in. Zara, Mothercare and Benetton rule the market.

T-shirts

Walk down the export surplus lane and you’ll see piles and piles of clothes with signs saying Rs 50 – 100 a piece. I kept pulling out the sizes and ended up with a lot of T-shirts. (Too many, says the husband!)  You will, however, have to make the effort to dig in really deep and find the correct sizes. The labels don’t always have the correct size mentioned. Most of these have not met the export standards and don’t get tagged properly.

How To Get There?

Take the turn opposite the Sarojini Nagar Police Station and go straight till you reach the Government School wall which has the car parking. You can’t miss the buzzing market right in front of you.  The kids export surplus market is the lane running parallel to the vegetable market. It has clothes for adults too, but the focus is kids wear here.

And, Don’t Forget:

  • The market is closed on Mondays. Trying going on Tuesdays as the new stock comes in that day.
  • It’s open from 11 AM to 9 PM
  • We recommend carrying a big bag to put all your shopping in. Small little plastic packets can be a pain to carry and can get left behind when you’re looking for things. (Personal experience!)
  • It’s a pretty crowded market, so if you want to look at the clothes leisurely head there in the morning before the maddening crowd swarms you.
  • Check whatever you’re buying for tears. There are export rejects remember!
  • Don’t forget to grab some delicious cold coffee from Depauls while you’re out there. They have a counter located inside the Khatta Meetha Shop. We know how pleasantly exhausting shopping can be.
