M Cube public library in Bandra

While I love the simple but vibrant decor with soft cushioned seats and low tables for kids to read I think they do need to add on a lot more books and a lot of thought to the books that finally make it to the racks. A city like Mumbai definitely needs places like these where we can inculcate the reading habit right during their formative yearsThe library has books in Hindi, Marathi and English for children up to the age of 16 years.

After the inauguration this was the first time that I went back to sit and review this new public library in Bandra. Its called Mcube which stands for Maharashtra Mitra Mandal. Located on the ground floor of Princess Building, on Dmonte Park road next to Bandra Gym its a modest attempt to open up a sprawling space with over 4000 books.

The place is clean & airy with books marked and slotted age wise on different racks. While I love the simple but vibrant decor with soft cushioned seats and low tables for kids to read I think they do need to add on a lot more books and a lot of thought to the books that finally make it to the racks.

Its a great place to come, read, get some time off from the hustle bustle of the city and spend time with your children avoiding those frequent visits to the mall most parents indulge in these days. I have visited a lot of public libraries where you have computer games that teach and add itself as a media of learning. You have puzzles, costumes, free play toys, colouring and so much more that its tough to get your kids out of there. Don’t know why but this one doesnt tempt me to go back or lacks a distinct reason for their readers to bookmark them.

Its a great attempt and I am sure they will add more books, and zing to the library making people want to come back. A city like Mumbai definitely needs places like these where we can inculcate the reading habit right during their formative years

The library has books in Hindi, Marathi and English for children up to the age of 16 years. In the pipeline are also plans for a book club, a film club and a series of creative workshops. All this at a nominal membership cost of Rs100 per month, in addition to Rs250 as deposit per book.

The library will accept monetary donations on a continuous basis for maintenance reasons. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the library at 2641 1497 or email them at [email protected].
