About Toto

The Toto stories are meant for kids in the age group of 3-6 years living in urban India. Toto is a lovable, cheeky little autorickshaw who lives in Mumbai with his driver Pattu. Toto, by character is brave, kind and a do-gooder. He loves to help others and makes new friends. He’s also sometimes naughty and at times a bit over-confident which often lands him in situations which are beyond his control/capability. But he always gets out of all the situations he finds himself in, having learnt new lessons, helped others and made new friends along the way too.

Toto’s stories are all about adventure and having fun while also solving problems and helping others. Involving people, animals and other vehicles and objects, Toto is a friend to all. Toto’s stories are also all about building character and developing positive self esteem in children at an early age. By reinforcing themes like how it is ok to not be the strongest or brightest but work from your strengths, how it is ok to make mistakes and then ask for help, we attempt to also help children develop confidence about themselves and motivate them to reach out and be of help to others. We have tried to keep out attitudes of competitiveness and being “better than someoneâ€_x009d_ but focused on recognizing the best within yourself and making the most of it.

The Purpose

The purpose of the Toto stories is threefold:

  1. To entertain– make children smile laugh and have fun as they join Toto in various memorable adventures. Toto’s driver Pattu is a little hard of hearing and his funny mis-hearings in time of crises are there to make to kids laugh. Also, sound words are used throughout to bring the stories alive.
  2. To Educate– educate children about the world around us, our immediate context . The stories are set in present day urban India and will all feature themes that our kids can connect with and relate to. Attempt is made to keep the language and words easy to read and pronounce but bring in some challenge for the child with new but simple words. We hope that over time the children will be able to read the books on their own.
  3. Life learning—Each Toto story ends with a life learning that deals with the issues and challenges of growing up in an urban environment. We’ve given special importance to presenting life learning lessons which go beyond clichés like “Honesty is the best policyâ€_x009d_ and “Slow and steady wins the raceâ€_x009d_
