Peekaboxx: Subscription Snack Boxes For Indian Kids

It is 2015 and the biggest worry for urban parents of might just be coming from the kitchen. Every morning, every mom will ask her child for an opinion on what to cook for lunch, dinner, snack, breakfast. The answer might either solve her kitchen query for the day or only serve to kickstart it!

So we turn to cookbooks and international cuisine. We reach beyond our repertoire and we try to create something in the kitchen that will capture their imagination, titillate their taste buds and does double duty by being healthy and tasty.

Paediatricians advice parents to not fixate on the main meals in the day and make sure a child eats healthy through whatever he eats. Snacks provide as much nutrition as a meal might and they are more fun too! Enter Peekaboxx. A subscription box that aims to contain healthy snacks for an entire month for a child in one box.

The brainchild of founder Dipti Govind, who as a mother herself was struggling with daily questions of how to make food fun for her child. So she created a concept of monthly subscription boxes to curate age specific snack boxes for children with expert nutritionist advise.

The idea: 

1. Boxes are divided into age groups. Boxes cater to children starting from 6 months old all the way up to 7 years.

2. All boxes contain organic and completely healthy snacks with a few fun boxes thrown in. Some of the snacks even do double duty as those that can be carried on the go. Throw some of the cookies in your diaper bag and your child will have a healthy snack when hunger calls.

3. Boxes are a mix of Indian and international products.

4. The in house nutritionist, Sonam Rayani Merchant provides a snack menu that is appropriate for the age with menu options through the month, a couple of recipes, and the nutrition information on what is in the box for the month.

5. There is also a special surprise in the form of a toy or a game in the box every month which needs a serious upgrade.

Pricing:

The boxes are priced according to the different ages the boxes cater to.

1. 6 months – 1 year: Rs. 1499
2. 1 – 2 years – Rs. 1199
3. 2-3 years – Rs. 1199
4. 3 – 5 years – Rs. 1499
5. 5 – 7 years – Rs. Rs. 1499

And that is where the kitchen comes to a grinding halt. While the buzz around town may be subscription boxes with almost everything available to subscribe to at the click of a button, these snack boxes start off as a good idea and lose the plot somewhere down the road. Here is what we think.

1. The annual subscription box rates at upwards of a Rs 1000 might just be completely unfeasible for parents. Our reaction is to wonder whether the price just isn’t too expensive for something that can easily be purchased as part of our monthly groceries from any big box store.

2. While we welcome suggestions and meal plans from a nutritionist, generic information about what to feed a 6 month old baby is available from the paediatrician itself.

3. Britannia’s Rusks really? Items that are available in the boxes vary from ragi flour to readymade products. As a mother who is well aware of the goodness of ragi flour, wouldn’t it just be simpler for me to purchase ragi flour from my kirana store?

4. How does Peekaboxx plan to increase its client base? Not everyone is intent on buying only organic snacks for their children. We wonder if it wouldn’t be a good idea to include some homemade Indian snacks for children too.

Peekaboxx is currently only available in Mumbai but Govind plans to diversify and deliver in other cities soon. We definitely believe this box needs a serious callout to add in a something unique that makes it interesting for each snack time. With a great idea on board Govind needs to shake the box a little to dish out some out of the box ideas and recipes to get us dialling.
