Review: A Twisted Tale in Dillydale

With a play involving popular characters like Mr. Men & Little Miss you already have the parents and kids both excited to see how the moms at Kidz Connect have brought these characters to life. While we waited impatiently for the play to commence the kids were busy colouring their favourite characters and spinning the wheel to know which character they most resonated with on that day. As Daniel helped the characters find clues to rescue Little Miss Princess they go through many lands like Dazzle, Neon, Monkey and Misery. The characterization, clean backdrops, effortlessness in their acts, pulling through an hour and 20 mins in those costumes and the sheer magic of the characters make the musical adventure worth watching.

Before we let the cat out of the bag we must modestly confess that Kids Stop Press.com is the only source of a published review for the musical entertainer, A Twisted Tale in Dillydale. Drum Rolls to that please!!!

With the theatre scene in India at such a nascent stage, ofcourse we are struggling to find musical entertainers for children and a new interactive & engaging medium and see most shows being prebooked even before the verdict is out. With a play involving popular characters like Mr. Men & Little Miss you already have the parents and kids both excited to see how the moms at Kidz Connect have brought these characters to life.

The underlying thought of there is a little bit of each one of these characters in all of us is something that connected with us instantly, this song kind of lingers with you even after you’ve left the show. While we waited impatiently for the play to commence the kids were busy colouring their favourite characters and spinning the wheel to know which character they most resonated with on that day. Make sure you get there 10 mins before the show so the kids don’t go back home without their favourite character. Do not forget to fill in your details and drop it in the KSP dropbox. 3 lucky winners from each of the shows get a chance to meet the characters backstage.

We also caught up with a few parents after the show to know their verdict, so you can watch that here.

The play begins with Daniel, the son of Mr. Brown who creates these characters in Dillydale. Daniel loves playing pranks and creates a clown that is a reflection of him. The clown loves to play pranks too, creating all the twists in DillyDale. The clown was indeed the star of the show with a brilliant act and takes Little Miss Princess away. Daniel is sent into Dillydale by his father to undo all the mess he has created.

The characterization and production value was the conversation point among most mothers, but we did see restless moms and kids during the first 30 mins of the show. Did they take too long to establish the characters and the plot?

The smiles resumed when the characters of Little Miss Sunshine, Little Miss Princess, Mr. Strong, Mr. Tickle took centrestage. The entire space was just filled with this wave of happiness. The children were beaming!

As Daniel helped the characters find clues to rescue Little Miss Princess they go through many lands like Dazzle, Neon, Monkey and Misery. While the story of Misery land was well comprehended the stories of Dazzle and Neon Land sent out giggles among parents who were trying really hard to explain to their children what the hell was going on! Monkey land had the children laugh out with glee and shake a leg with the Commandos on Monkey Dance.A crisper edit would have definitely got the kids and parents more glued on to their seats.

Finally Miss Princess is rescued, the prankster Daniel and clown turn into good Samaritans. As always there is a finale moment that gets the kids all queued up for pictures with the characters and do the Monkey Dance.

We were a little disappointed by the music not because it wasn’t good but only because the bar was set higher with their debut production “An Elf For a Day”. The background score made all the transitions into the play very seamless. The message about friendship, something special in each one of us and ‘Make the Big Change’  sears through the climax.

The characters were brought to life by perfect costumes, and yes it needs a special mention, did a fantastic job in engaging with the kids and bringing the characters to life. The sound levels were just right for a change to match the auditory levels of what the kids should be exposed to. The characterization, clean backdrops, effortlessness in their acts, pulling through an hour and 20 mins in those costumes and the sheer magic of the characters make the musical adventure worth watching. Kidz Connect strains to create an epic musical adventure and is flawed but an honest attempt with a great scope of self reflection for the older children. I recommend you make time for this one!
