Child Labour in India (1)

Kids Stop Press partners the students of Bhavan’s college in their endevour to stop child labour  on  February 9

It has been four years since Lokhandwala residents had first learnt about Rameshwari, the underage domestic help who was allegedly subjected to physical and mental abuse by her employer, an aspiring actress living in the area. At the time many NGOs had pitched in to help her cause and rehabilitate a future for her. Speaking to Mahan Shakti, one such NGO involved, we have now been informed that Rameshwari has since then been provided shelter by these various NGOs,  allowed periodic visits from her father and attendance to a regular school.

While Rameshwari was able to rescue some hope back into her life, there are many nameless, faceless children  who are not as fortunate.

Taking inspiration from such disturbing but all too common incidents, the students of Bhavan’s College have launched a new anti-child labour initiative – NADAAN, ‘Yeh age, wage ki nahi’ . Kids Stop Press will help these students create the buzz and awareness about their campaign. Do join hands with us to make a difference.

The campaign which will take place on February 9, 2013, in association with The Candle Project, is an NGO dedicated towards the eradication of child exploitation. They have also conducted a donation drive, the proceeds of which would go to the aforementioned NGO. The campaign is also planning an extensive awareness program complete with issuing of banners, posters, pamphlets, printed t- shirts etc in and around the Bhavan’s College premises.

Realizing that child labour is indeed a systemic social problem, this campaign ultimately intends to highlight how it damages not just the life a child or two, but rather the life of an entire generation.

Also, if you notice any instances of child labour or exploitation, please call 1098 to assist immediate action. Remember, the victims don’t don’t want hollow sympathy, they want action!
