Summer is here and the month of April brings with it a slew of festivals for different communities. It’s amazing to see so many festivals bring celebrated around the country at the same time. The Hindu calendar is different from the New Year calendar that all of us know and celebrate in January. This weekend in different parts of the country, the beginning of a new year is being celebrated – Poila Baisakh in West Bengal, Baisakhi in Punjab and Varshaporappu by the Tamil/Telugu community.

Poila Baisakh (or Baishakh) is a festival celebrated in West Bengal on the 15th of April and marks the New Year for this community. The word Poila means ‘first’ and Baishakh is the first month in the Bengali calendar. While Baisakhi celebrated on the 14th of April marks the beginning of the solar year for the people of North India, particularly in Punjab. They thank God for the good harvest they have had and for the year ahead. The Tamil/Telugu New Year Varshaporappu is celebrated on the 14th of April- which also coincides with the peak summer in most parts of the country!

Food is always a very important part of any celebration and we have contributors who are sharing their favourite recipes that they make for their families to celebrate the New Year.
