When I was pregnant, I was all ears to a long list of do’s and don’t’s prescribed by my elders and well-wishers to ensure a smooth pregnancy and best health for the baby. Avoiding smoking, drinking and staying away from eating certain foods are things we all know already but when it comes to our beauty regimes things aren’t so clear. There isn’t enough information and we are always left wondering whether this treatment is safe or what we should be doing instead.

We know you’re exhausted with all the hormonal changes and the extra weight and want to perk yourself up by looking good. However, before going in for any beauty treatment make sure to have a chat with your beauty technician and educate yourself about it. Caution is the keyword to observe while going in for any of the following beauty treatments.

The impervious structure of nails ensures that the colour we put on nails doesn’t get into our bloodstream which makes its safe for pregnant women to apply nail paint. We recommend skipping the nail paint and just get your nails buffed and filed for healthy looking clean and neat hands during pregnancy. Make sure the therapist doesn’t remove cuticles or calluses which might increase the risk of cuts and infections. Also, keep your hands moisturised to avoid dead skin.

Choose Highlights Over Global Hair Colour

Colouring your hair during pregnancy is a very debatable topic. There are a lot of known or suspected carcinogens in hair products which could be hazardous for you if it comes into contact with the scalp for a prolonged period of time. So if you decide to colour your hair, it might be a good idea to stick to highlighting because the product isn’t directly touching your scalp. However, most doctors advise against hair colour completely.

Any beauty treatment that increases the body temperature is the one to avoid during pregnancy. Saunas, steam room, heat wraps, whirlpool and hot tubs are some of the treatments you should not indulge in if you’re pregnant. Prolonged increase in temperature can be dangerous during the early stages of development.

Avoid Rigorous Massages

Towards the end of your pregnancy especially, a massage feels like complete bliss. Gentle massage is good for the back, legs and shoulders. The third trimester of your pregnancy is when it can be very relaxing. However, make sure you choose a qualified pregnancy masseur who will know the correct techniques to use. Ensure the oils used during the massage are of good quality to avoid any allergic reactions.

Electrolysis is one of the beauty treatments to avoid completely during pregnancy. The galvanic current these treatments send through the body is dangerous and should be avoided entirely.

Be Careful While Waxing

Waxing, though otherwise safe during pregnancy, can cause ingrown hairs or infections if not done properly. Make sure your beauty therapist takes all possible care to sanitise the equipment that is used during the process. Waxing may also cause irritation and it is recommended to avoid waxing if you have sensitive skin.

Skip Injectables Like Botox And Fillers

Most dermatologists would not recommend undergoing any injectable filler treatment when you’re pregnant. Although done by trained professionals, there is not enough research to prove that they’re safe for use or otherwise during pregnancy. It’s best to avoid until after the baby is born.
