My 4-year-old came back from school the other day all sad and gloomy. After numerous cuddles and a few tears she told me the reason – she couldn't add properly. She kept getting confused and all her friends had given correct answers to the teacher. Teaching your preschooler to love maths can be challenging. But building on their knowledge and understanding of concepts is extremely important.

I always believe if something appeals to kids visually then they learn it much faster and retain a lot more too. So I told her that we were going to do some craft, play a game and learn how to add. She loved the sound of that!

This Maths Tree activity is simple and it teaches kids how to add while having some fun. You can use the same concept to teach them subtraction as well. My daughter had a wonderful time drawing out her tree, pasting it together and writing the numbers. It took her a bit of time, but she's learnt the concept of addition well.

Materials

  • Coloured Paper – Green, Brown & Yellow
  • Marker
  • Red Pom Pom
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Penknife
  • 2 Dice

Method

  • Cut out a tree top out of green and a tree trunk out of the brown coloured paper and stick both the pieces.
  • On the tree trunk mark three equidistant squares using the dice.
  • Cut out first two squares completely using a penknife.
  • For the third square slit two vertical sides only.
  • Cut out a long strip of yellow paper, about the width of the dice.
  • Weave the yellow strip from the right-hand side in the last square of the trunk so that it looks like a window.
  • Slowly pull the yellow strip towards left and go on marking the numbers 1-12.
  • Put an addition sign between the first two squares and an equal to sign between box 2 and 3.

How to Play:

  • Ask your child to roll both the dice. Place the two dice on first two squares.
  • Now ask your child to count and place the total number of red pompoms on the green part of the tree.
  • Pull the yellow strip to the correct answer.
