It’s always good to come across mommy entrepreneurs working hard managing their babies and brands. This time over at the KSP & Make & Bake Tea party we got a chance to chat up with multi-talented woman behind The Make & Bake Ceramic Studio, Sanchi Singhvi.

Sanchi Sanghvi

Make & Bake is a paint your own pottery studio situated in Mumbai.

Tell us about yourself and how did Make & Bake come about?
All my life I have dreamt of working with something that is fun for me and a field that would allow me to express my imagination. I graduated from Pratt Institute in New York, I majored in Graphic Designing and my electives were ceramic.

After I graduated I started interning as a graphic designer in a small firm in New York. Every day on my way to work I use to see this cute little paint your own pottery studio called “Our Name Is Mudâ€_x009d_ and used to wonder how nice it would be to work there. Finally one day I applied for a job there. I worked at that studio for 1 year and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I also enrolled myself in a course for small business entrepreneurs while working at “Our Name Is Mudâ€_x009d_.

Then came the time to move back to Mumbai as I had promised my father that I would be back after completing my education. After moving back I decided to open a similar concept here. At that time there weren’t too many places, which taught creative concepts to children and let them have a fun time while seeing their imagination take form.  I just knew I had to open a studio here knowing how much I enjoyed working at the one in New York.

Your journey in the last 7 years and how has the creative scene evolved with kids today?
I opened Make n bake in 2007. It was exciting to bring a new concept to Mumbai. I got an overwhelming response with make n bake at the opening but as days went by I realized that people didn’t have the mindset to spend or introduce a concept like that to their children. Over the years now there are a lot more of creative concepts opening around and I am glad to see that parents have embraced these new concepts and are allowing kids in broadening their horizons. These creative activities really help the children to push the limits of their imagination as well as help them build a lot of self-confidence.

What has helped you continue to be a leader in the category for 7 years?
I love children. Just working at a fun studio and meeting children everyday motivates me and keeps me going to run this studio. The joy of seeing an idea and a piece shape up in those tiny hands is a huge motivating factor. The colours, kids and a new piece every day has helped me make Make n Bake the most loved ceramic studio in Mumbai.

What are the favourites at Make n Bake that kids can’t get enough of ?
I think the favorites are the banks since we have a lot of different shapes like mermaid, angry bird, foot ball, butterfly, piggy, race care, princess, burger etc. Kids find It is hard to choose and want to paint all of them at a time.

What should we expect for the new season?
This season we have a lot of new summery pieces such as flower, heart, star, flip flop boxes, flower, penguin, cupcake dish, turtles giraffes, dragon collectibles.

You are also a mother now, how has that changed, helped your workings at Make N Bake?

Being a mother now has motivated or encouraged me more to work with make n bake because I feel parents are always looking for different activities to do with their children and this would be a nice activity for the family to enjoy together.

At the studios customers chooses from the variety of bisque ware (raw ceramic) offered to them, which they express their ideas with the use of paints and brushes provided to them, by us. The painted piece is then returned back to them after one weeks time since we need to glaze and bake it to give it the finishing touch, which makes the piece microwave and food safe.
