Let them fall…

Over this Diwali break we’ve done a lot of fun things and a lot of nothings like literally nothings but just played around the house, chill on the sofa, some gardening and watched the spider spin a golden web and fall so many times while he was at it. This thought actually struck me while we watched the spider spin the web and the daughter asked me “mom why doesn’t the spiders mamma save him when he falls?”

Over this Diwali break we’ve done  a lot of fun things and a lot of nothings like literally nothings but just played around the house, chill on the sofa, some gardening and watched the spider spin a golden web and fall so many times while he was at it. I have to confess both the daughter and I actually enjoy doing sweet nothings sometimes and its our time when nobody is watching or judging us. I enjoy it the most. This thought actually struck me while we watched the spider spin the web and the daughter asked me “mom why doesn’t the spiders mamma save him when he falls?” I was speechless trying to think of an answer for the nth time of all the questions she asks me. Not knowing what to answer I just said because he is now a big spider and not a baby any more. I know its not the most convincing answer but I just realized how protected our children are. I think humans are the only species who keep watching their children till the end of time. Animals, birds, insects they all  leave their nests as soon as they are born and fend for themselves. The daughter interrupted the thought and asked for something and I moved on. Again yesterday at the park while the daughter was busy climbing on the gym and the slide there were kids who played bare feet and were not afraid to fall or actually had nobody watching them. And here I was watching her to the T motivating her, come on you can do it and pushing her to try and finish the jungle gym. I told her that it was okay to fall and only if you fall do you know how to do it right the next time and am I glad that she did try. Do you feel as a parent that you haven’t pushed and motivated your child enough to let him realize his potential? Have you let him fall so he can experience failure? I think as Indians we are extremely protective and specially if its a girl child. I think we should let go and let them fall…
