Homework- every parent and child's worst nightmare!
For a generation that has grown up writing pages every single day, I find the ghosts of my past return when I see my child sitting with the books every evening. For older kids- I get the logic, but tiny tots? Well, not anymore.
The HRD ministry has issued new directives to schools across the country, putting an end to homework for kids in class I and II and has also put a cap to the weight of the school bag that kids can carry to school every day.
Here's what the directive says that brings joy to parents:
- No homework for classes 1 and 2.
- Schools to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of school bags in accordance with the Government of India instructions.
- The weight of school bags for classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg.
- The weight of school bags for classes III and V should not exceed 2 to 3 kg.
- The weight of school bags for classes VI and VII should not exceed 4 kg.
- The weight of school bags for classes VIII and IX should not exceed 4.5 kg.
- The weight of school bags for classes X and above should not exceed 5 kg.
- Schools have also been clearly instructed to prescribe only languages and mathematics for Classes I and II, Language, EVS and Mathematics for Classes III to V as prescribed by NCERT.
Parents across the country are waiting with bated breath, to see this directive come into action immediately. So how is your child going to spend those extra minutes they gain from doing homework? Books, games or TV? Tell us in the comments below.
